Participation of representatives of the “Association of Women and Glaciers” of the Center for the Study of Glaciers of the National Academy of Science in the online Symposium Adventure of Science: Women and Glaciers in Central Asia


On December 1, 2022, the project Adventure of Science: Women and Glaciers in Central Asia organized an online symposium together with UNESCO, Almaty office, to wrap up this year’s program. Representatives of the “Association of Women and Glaciers” of the State Scientific Institution «Center for Research of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of the Tajikistan» took an active part in this meeting.

The purpose of participation in this meeting was, first of all, to attract women of the State Scientific Institution «Center for Research of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of the Tajikistan» to study glaciers, improve their knowledge and skills for conducting scientific research, implement the instructions of the Founder of National Peace and Unity, the leader of the nation Emomali Rahmon, in the direction of studying and protection of glaciers, as well as declaring 2025 the International Year for the Protection of Glaciers, identifying new innovative ways in the study and research of glaciers, as well as familiarizing with the achievements of women glaciologists in this field.

The program of this Symposium was reviewed in three sessions, and the topics was about “Gender equality in the natural sciences” and “Civil science and environmental protection”. During the participation, women glaciologists of the Center listened with great interest to the speakers, actively participated in interviews and asked their questions.

The Symposium was attended by representatives of different countries who spoke on the topics of gender equality, climate change, mountain research and environmental protection, including Sabina Hoefler from the University of Bern, Switzerland, Iroda Bobozhonova from Tajikistan, Nasiba Baimatova from Kazakhstan, Isabelle Haag from Germany, Christine Hilbich from Switzerland, etc.

It should be noted that all the achievements that our women have achieved in the field of studying glaciers are thanks to the support of the country’s leadership. In particular, the leader of the nation Emomali Rahmon, always supports women’s initiatives in the field, pays special attention to the issue of raising the status of women, and at the same time takes useful measures to attract them to high positions.

At the end of the online symposium, the participants expressed their opinions and suggestions, noting that such meetings should be held regularly so that they can improve the knowledge and skills of women in research and basic sciences.

Thus, the leadership of the State Scientific Institution «Center for Research of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of the Tajikistan» decided that its representatives would not only participate in such conferences, but also make presentations and promote cooperation with development partners.
