On the initiative of the State Scientific Institution “Center for the Study of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan” on June 7, 2022, in the Zarandud Hall of the “Kokhi Somon” Palace, as part of the Second International High-Level Conference on the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028 ”, a side event entitled “The Contribution of Women to Glacier Studies” was held.

The purpose of this event was, first of all, to involve women in the study of glaciers, to increase their knowledge and skills in fundamental research, in the field of study and protection of glaciers and to propose new innovative methods for the study and researching  glaciers.

The event was attended by employees of the State Scientific Institution “Center for the Study of Glaciers of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan”, representatives of international organizations, including UNESCO, the Committee for Tourism Development under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and other interested parties.

It was opened by the director of the Center for the Study of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Professor Abdulkhamid Kayumov, stopping on the role and contribution of women in the study of glaciers and noting that the path chosen by our women requires work, courage and patience.

He noted that despite all the obstacles, today women, along with men, actively participate in all scientific and fundamental research on the study of glaciers at altitudes of more than 4000 meters. In addition, he emphasized that all the achievements of our women in the study of glaciers are associated with the support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and especially the Founder of Peace and National Unity – the Leader of the Nation, Emomali Rahmon, of all women’s initiatives in this area.

 

It was emphasized that special attention is paid to the issue of raising the status of women, and effective measures are being taken to attract them to various higher positions.

During the event, reports were heard from women from the Center for the Study of Glaciers of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan on various areas of study of glaciers: researcher Bakhtibekova Nasiba “Initiatives of the Founder of the National Peace – the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon on glaciers in the context of climate change”, leading researcher of the Center Dilorom Kayumova “Perspectives of isotope hydrology in the study of glaciers”, Kamolova Dilbar “Study of the state of glaciers in the Surkhob river basin in the upper reaches of the Naukrum river”, Nilufar Sharipova “The amount of heavy metals in samples of glacier No. 507”, Bokizoda Adlinisso “The role of glaciers Zeravshan River Basin in the Formation of Water and Hydropower Resources of the Territory”, Adolat Davlyatova “The Current State of Glaciation in the Obi Khingob River Basin in the Milestones of the Batrut Inflow” and Khadicha Saidzoda “Research of the Current State of the Burs Pulsating Glacier in the Obi Khingou River Basin”.

A general discussion was held on the reports heard, during which the participants asked questions of interest to them, expressed their opinion on the content of the reports and expressed their satisfaction with the successful parallel session.

At the end of the event, the director of the Center for the Study of Glaciers of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Professor Abdul-Khamid Kayumov, thanked all the participants for their active participation, women for meaningful reports, as well as for organizing and successfully holding this important event.
